Did you know we also have a WAVE Fellows program that increases visibility and accessibility to Caltech's PhD programs to undergraduates in STEM fields who are seriously considering attending graduate school?

Maricellyn (Rissy) McDonald, from Claflin University, spent ten weeks of her summer with the Victoria Orphan Research Group.

Q: “What are you working on for your summer project?”
A: This summer, I used lab-based spectroscopic imaging to gain an understanding of what light signals are reflected from submerged aquatic vegetation (seagrass and macroalgae). Though my project was lab-based, the larger project aims to develop more effective ways to map seagrass beds in the field.

Q: “What type of impact do you see this research having (on society, in the field, etc.)?”
A: My summer research has generated essential lab-based data that will assist in developing field-based seagrass mapping and monitoring methods as well as aiding in the interpretation of data obtained from these methods. Seagrass is essential to blue carbon storage; in implementing these improved monitoring methods, more sufficient effort can be put into the protection and conservation of these beds.

Q: “Has this summer experience changed the way you think about your research or your future
interests?”
A: This summer has caused a clear shift in my future goals and interest. I am deeply passionate about scientific communications and have found that my interests during undergrad have clearly aligned with this passion. However, through my experience as a WAVE Fellow, I have reaffirmed my deep love forhands-on research. Moving into graduate school and my future career, I definitely see myself doing more research centered work and exploring ways to bring that research to the general public.

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) program is one of the "crown jewels" of Caltech. Since 1979, SURF students have had the opportunity to conduct research under the guidance of experienced mentors working at the frontier of their fields. But, not every SURF takes place at Caltech!

Congratulations to Georgia Gkioxari, assistant professor of computing and mathematical sciences and electrical engineering at Caltech, for being named as one of 20 Packard Fellows for 2025.

Gkioxari, who is also a William H. Hurt Scholar, was awarded the fellowship for her research that “gives machines the ability to perceive the world,” according to a press release from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. “My research is in computer vision, a form of artificial intelligence,” Gkioxari explains. “I build computational models that take images and videos as input. Through these models, I’m trying to allow computers to see the world just as you and I can see them through our eyes and analyze the light that comes in.”
