We celebrated #StorySharerWeek this week - and it was a welcome reminder of what we can achieve when we work together across sectors. Our #ReadingRights report with Waterstones #ChildrensLaureate Frank Cottrell-Boyce calls for experts and practitioners to come together to make sure every child can discover the lifelong benefits of reading. ✨ As #StorySharerWeek comes to an end, we are delighted to announce that Angela from Beechmount Sure Start in Belfast is our #StorySharerOfTheYear! ✨ The Story Sharer of the Year Award recognises an exceptional delivery partner who has gone above and beyond to engage families through the power of sharing stories. Angela's colleague Penny, who nominated her, said she is an "amazing member of staff" and a "powerful advocate", who has built a strong community of families through her thoughtful, inspiring, fun, and engaging story time sessions. And the members of our judging panel, including Baroness Floella Benjamin and Camilla Reid, were bowled over by how she uses #Bookstart programmes with families. In #StorySharerWeek, we're celebrating our fantastic Early Years partners, who use our programmes to inspire families to get reading together. We know what a difference our partners make - and what an impact they have when they share our #Bookstart packs with parents and carers. That's because parents and carers are more likely to start reading with their children - and keep that going - when books are introduced in a warm, encouraging way by someone they trust. 💫 Each time our packs are gifted, there's an opportunity to spark that connection. So we're sharing top tips to make the most of the gifting moment - including ideas from Early Years practitioners: https://lnkd.in/edAJXAFc #EarlyYears #EarlyYearsPractice #SharedReading #ReadingTogether #SharingStories

📢 NEW: Today, as part of #StorySharerWeek, we're publishing our brand new evidence-informed guide into the way shared reading can help to build key life skills. Research shows that reading together helps children develop executive function and self-regulation - the core capabilities they need for learning, wellbeing and resilience. That includes skills such as attention, memory, emotional understanding and self-control. Our guide includes: 👉 What studies say about the effect of shared reading on these vital skills 👉 How this works in practice 👉 Top tips for building this into your work with families 👉 Case study examples from London Early Years Foundation (LEYF) 👉 Book recommendations Find it all here: https://lnkd.in/e6WVjFHd #ExecutiveFunction #SelfRegulation #SharedReading #ReadingTogether #SharingStories #BenefitsOfReading #EarlyYears #ChildDevelopment #EarlyYearsPractice

Such an honour to visit Clarence House yesterday to celebrate 100 years of BookTrust with Her Majesty The Queen, authors, ministers, our partners and of course Peter Rabbit. To be in the same room as so many incredible people who are shaping children's reading was a privilege. I really enjoyed sharing with librarians how we use their feedback each year to make BookTrust Storytime even more special for families and more effective for librarians to deliver. And showing some of our funders and corporate partners our Bookstart packs and how much consideration goes into every line to encourage families to read together. As well as having the opportunity to meet Her Majesty The Queen, personal highlights include sharing with Dame Julia Donaldson how much her books shaped my own children's early years and Sir Michael Morpurgo giving me a message for my 11 year old daughter when I told him how much she has enjoyed his recent books of Shakespeare stories. A day to remember!
We were honoured today to join our Patron, Her Majesty The Queen, to celebrate 100 years of BookTrust at Clarence House. We were joined by authors, illustrators, and some of our fantastic Early Years partners to mark our centenary and look forward to a future in which every child can receive the transformative benefits of reading. During #StorySharerWeek, it was a joyful reminder of the impact we can have when we work together to make a difference. Thank you to Her Majesty the Queen for her ongoing support of our mission. Did you see? We unveiled our brand new #Bookstart Baby book today! Starring Peter Rabbit, Four Happy Bunnies is the first book that we've ever created exclusively for Bookstart Baby - giving us the chance to include features that will help to get children and families reading: 📖 It's a simple story with a beginning, middle and end - helpful for adults who might not be familiar with books. Progressing through a story with a satisfying ending is a real driver for reading and re-reading. 🎶 Rhyming text makes reading aloud enjoyable and natural, ideal for parents and carers who may lack confidence reading aloud. And rhythm and repetition support babies' early language development, too. 🖼️ The pictures show what's happening in the text - ideal for parents and carers who find reading challenging, as they can easily follow the story and stay engaged alongside their child. 🫳 Felt flaps and bright colours help to make reading fun, inviting playful interaction between parents and children - which in turn helps to build positive associations with books. Find out more about the book's features and how we created it with Puffin here 👇 https://lnkd.in/epjKHNMA #BabyBooks #ChildrensBooks #ReadingTogether #SharedReading #SharingStories #ChildDevelopment

There's a lot I could say about yesterday's sparkling event at Clarence House, but more than anything I was struck by how powerfully cross-sector our work at BookTrust is. I said it in January after our #ReadingRights summit, and I'll say it again - it is pure magic to see ministers chatting to authors, health visitors chatting to directors of children's services, and publishers chatting to family hub leads. Not just because it's a tangible manifestation of silos breaking down and pennies dropping - it's also about connecting the system at every level. From children and families themselves, to our delivery partners, to the communities and local systems within which they're operating, to the national structures and policies that constrain or empower them - BookTrust is working to align and mobilise everybody at every level around the shared goal of getting children reading. The connections that were sparked yesterday could lead to so many places we haven't even imagined yet, thanks to the passion and creativity of everyone we work with. I can't wait to see all the ways that yesterday's inspiring celebration continues to ripple outwards over the coming weeks and months!
