Judd Trump and Aaron Hill both made maximum breaks on the opening day of the Xi’an Grand Prix in China. The brace of 147s takes the total this season to 13, just two short of the record of 15 set last season.
Trump’s maximum, the ninth of his career and first since 2022, came in the fifth frame of a 5-2 defeat of Onyee Ng. The world number one also composed breaks of 100, 94 and 55 in the win and will play former UK and Masters champion Matthew Stevens next.
“It’s been a while. A lot of other people have been making 147s and making it look easy. I feel it was about time I made one. It was special to make one in China, the atmosphere was very good out there,” said 36-year-old Trump.
“It’s a little bit surprising everyone has been making them. I think the standard of play has just improved. Everybody seems to want to make maximums now.”
Hill then matched his feat in the second frame of his tie with Huang Jianbo. Ireland’s 23-year-old Hill made his first official 147 just 23 days ago at the BetVictor English Open, and has now doubled his tally.
Trump and Hill will share the £5,000 high break prize if there are no more 147s in this event. There have now been 230 maximums in snooker history.
