of Laguna. Among the early colonists was gacho Joo Vieira da Rocha, one of the
leaders of the Ragamuffin Revolution in Laguna, who moved afterwards to Imaru
with his two sons.
The municipality of Imaru was established on 27 August
1890.

The coat of arms features the Paschal lamb, recalling the town's early name
and dedication to St. John the Baptist. The fishes in base recall that Imaru
is located on Lake Imaru, Santa Catarina's biggest lake (8,632 ha).
