The municipality of Taba (4,046 inhabitants in 2007; 9,475 ha) is located 80
km north-west of Porto Alegre.
Taba is named for Tupi-Guarani words
meaning "union of waters", referring to the confluence of streams that form
river Santa Cruz, here the limit with the neighboring municipality of Triunfo.
Taba was established by Azorean immigrants mostly coming from Taquari, German
immigrants coming from So Leopoldo, and Italian immigrants coming from the
mountains. Originally known as So Joaquim, the settlement was renamed to Taba
in 1940.
The municipality of Taba was established by State Law No. 10,660
promulgated on 28 December 1995, separating from Taquari, and inaugurated on 1
January 1997.
