Morro Reuter was established as the 6th district of So Leopoldo by Municipal Law No. 264 promulgated on 24 March 1956. The district was transferred to the newly formed municipality of Dois Irmos by State Law No. 3,823 promulgated on 10 October 1959.
The municipality of Morro Reuter was established by State Law No. 9,583 promulgated on 20 March 1992.
