FUNASA (Funda��o Nacional de Sa�de - National Health Foundation) was
established by Decree No. 100 issued on 16 April 1991, as a public foundation
depending on the Ministry of Health. FUNASA is the merger of:
- Funda��o
Servi�os de Sa�de P�blica (FSESP - Public Health Services Foundation);
-
Superintend�ncia de Campanhas de Sa�de P�blica (SUCAM - Public Health Campaigns
Superintendency);`
- Secretaria Nacional de A��es B�sicas de Sa�de (SNABS -
National Secretariat of Health Basic Operations);
- Secretaria Nacional de
Programas Especiais de Sa�de (SNPES - National Secretariat of Health Special
Programs).
The aims of FUNASA are:
- disease prevention and control;
- education to health;
- healthcare for demanding populations, especially in
North and North-East;
- sanitation and control of endemic diseases;

scientific and technological research in health.
FUNASA was also involved in
the reform of the health system that yielded to the establishment of the Health
Unique System (Sistema �nico de Sa�de - SUS).
Among the key programs
currently pushed by FUNASA are the improvement of housing to control Chagas
disease and of freshwater supply and sewerage infrastructure in the towns bigger
than 50,000 inhabitants, and of waste management in rural areas.

The flag of FUNASA is white with the foundation's emblem,
composed mainly on a white map of Brazil outlined in blue and superimposed with
the red writing "FUNASA".
