Club Universitario de Deportes (Universitario, La U) is self-styled "the most champion club in Peru", referring to its 26 national titles.

Universitario was established on 7 August 1924 in Lima by students from Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos who met in the seat of the Peruvian Students' Federation. The club, named Federaci�n Universitaria de F�tbol, merged the teams representing the Faculties of Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, Escuela Especial de Ingenier�a, Escuela Especial de Agronom�a and Escuela Normal Central.

In 1928, the Peruvian Football Federation invited the club to join the First League. Federaci�n Universitaria ranked 2nd, eventually defeated by Alianza Lima (1-0, 1-1, 0-2). The club won its first national title in 1929. Eight club members were enrolled into the national team that competed in the first World Cup, organized in Uruguay in 1930; Luis de Souza Ferreira, one of the club's founders, scored the first goal of the national team in the World Cup.

The club was renamed in 1931 to Club Universitario de Deportes; on 29 November 1931, Lolo Fern�ndez (1913-1996) played his first match with the club against Deportes Magellanes (Chile), scoring the victorious goal. Fern�ndez played 180 matches with the club, scoring 156 goals and contributing to six national titles. Fern�ndez score seven goals during Berlin Olympic Games (1936), being the tournament's second top scorer. Fern�ndez retired on 30 August 1953, after a last triumph of Universtario retired Alianza Lima (4-2, three goals scored by Lolo). He is remembered by the title of "Eternal Idol" .

Universitario adopted the professional status in 1952. In 1972, Universitario was the first Peruvian club to play the final of Copa Libertadores, lost to Independiente (Argentina) (0-0, 1-2). On 18 March 1975, it was the first Peruvian team to win a Copa Libertadores match in Uruguay, 2-0 to Montevideo Wanderers. Universitario is still the sole Peruvian team to have won a Copa Libertadores match in Brzail, 2-1 to Palmeiras (8 April 1979).
