The SFV was founded on 16 March 1985 by Herv� Pinoteau, Lucien Philippe (�) and Pierre Charri�. The SFV succeeded the "Association fran�aise d'�tudes internationales de vexillologie" (AFEIV, French Association for International Studies in Vexillology), active from 1966 to 1975. The flag of the SFV, designed by Herv� Pinoteau, was adopted on 15 June 1985. The respective proportions of the fields are 9:1:1:5:1:1:9.
