Southampton boss Will Still has urged his players to "believe" in themselves more after a tough start to the season.

The Saints have only won two games in the Championship this campaign, drawing five times and losing twice.

They are 17th in the table with 11 points after nine games.

"We need to believe in ourselves a bit more and have confidence in what we're doing," he told BBC Radio Solent.

"We can't feel sorry for ourselves when things aren't quite going the way we want them to go, we have to keep working.

"You don't turn a season of so many losses into something brilliant and beautiful in the space of a few months."

After their opening day victory over Wrexham at St Mary's, Still's side failed to win in their following six league games before winning again, away at Sheffield United at the end of September.

Despite their struggles in front of goal, they have the second highest expected goals in the Championship this season.

Their XG is 15.5 goals but they have only managed to scored on 11 occasions which means they have underperformed by 4.5 goals - only Sheffield United have a worse ratio this season.

First up after the international break they take on Swansea City at St Mary's before a midweek trip to Bristol City.

"We have a clear goal and objective for the coming months," Still added.

"We're just going to work to pick up as many points as we can before the next break, we can't look for excuses or feel sorry for ourselves.

"It's the Championship so it is always going to be difficult and we have to get on with it."
