A man and woman arrested after the baby was taken to hospital in a serious condition have been released on conditional bail

A one-year-old girl has died after being taken to hospital with serious injuries, police have said.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said it was called at 11:34 BST on Friday and attended an address on Dairy Crest Drive in Newport, on the Isle of Wight.

The baby died in hospital on Sunday afternoon, the force confirmed.

A 31-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman, both from Newport, were earlier arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. Both have been released on conditional bail pending further inquiries until 1 November.

Insp Oly Greenhowe said it was an "incredibly sad situation" and urged people not to speculate online about what might have happened.

"We are continuing to conduct thorough enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident and how the child became injured," he said.

"If you have any relevant information on this incident, please get in touch with us directly."
