Tips to keep you safe amid record-challenging August heat

AccuWeather's Emmy Victor reported live from Chicago on the afternoon of Aug. 27 with advice on how you can make sure the people most vulnerable to heat stay safe.

00:00And, you know, we checked in with Emmy Victor yesterday, first day of school for some.

00:03Emmy Victor is joining us live once again with how people can stay safe from this extreme heat.

00:08Emmy.

00:12Well, Jeff, I'll tell you this, you know, it's one thing to be standing in the sun

00:15and feeling the heat, but I'm standing right under a tree and I'm still so hot right now.

00:20There are some brave souls out that are walking Chicago's riverfront right now,

00:24and I'm not exactly sure why, but I will tell you this.

00:27If you look at this video from earlier this morning, you will see that a lot of people

00:31did take the opportunity to get out early before the sun really started beating down in this area

00:37and got their exercise in.

00:39So for anyone who may be seeking relief from the heat today,

00:43the city has designated over 250 public places as cooling centers,

00:48and officials are reminding people to check on their neighbors right now.

00:52This includes younger children, older adults,

00:55those who live alone and those who do not have air conditioning.

00:59Now, in some cases, our loved ones may not understand the threat or perhaps wish to go

01:04somewhere else. There are things you can do to get them to a cooler place.

01:10So sometimes you may have to be creative.

01:12It may be not saying you're not safe here, you need to do something different,

01:16but it may be, you know, making it something fun.

01:19You know, let's go take a let's go to get lunch.

01:22I need to run to the grocery store. Come with me.

01:25Those kinds of things where it's more of an activity rather than a you need to.

01:31To keep your indoor space cool, avoid using your oven and stove,

01:35close your curtains and turn off non-essential lighting.

01:39But if you must spend time outside today, make sure to drink plenty of water

01:44and wear light colored, loose fitting clothing.

01:47We can't stress that enough.

01:48And then don't forget, I've been seeing a lot of people walking their dogs today,

01:51very important to make sure to take care of those furry friends,

01:54let them use the bathroom and bring them back in as soon as possible.

01:57They're also very susceptible to getting heat related

02:01injuries and illnesses in this weather as well.

02:07In the windy city, we could use a little bit of a breeze there

02:10on a day like today where we are challenging record highs.

02:14And here we have some ongoing severe thunderstorms in parts of Michigan.

02:18There's actually a very, very short lived,

02:21maybe about a five to seven minute long tornado warning near the west side of Saginaw Bay.

02:27That warning has been canceled very early.

02:30It was there just for a brief moment or two.
