AccuWeather's Leslie Hudson reported live this morning from Brevard County, Florida, providing updates on how Tropical Storms Imelda and Humberto are affecting the cruise industry.
Transcript
00:00Cruise lines say safety comes first, which means many ships are just in plans on the fly.
00:07On the fly.
00:07On the fly, not on the water.
00:09Yeah, I like that.
00:10AccuWeather's Leslie Hudson is live near Port Canaveral, Florida, with what that means for passengers this week.
00:15You've got the AccuWeather rain jacket.
00:17Have you had a few showers on you, too?
00:21Oh, yes.
00:22Yeah, it's definitely changing here this morning, Ari.
00:26So, you know, if you look at the radar, you can see we're definitely getting some of those outer bands,
00:30that outer periphery rotation that's bringing in, coming in from the north, those squalls down to the south.
00:35So I've got my kestrel here, and it was reading right around 16 miles an hour.
00:41So the winds have definitely picked up.
00:42We're actually a little bit more landlocked than we are, a little more tucked in.
00:46So currently about 13 to 14.
00:48But if I held this up, it's probably going to be around 16 mile per hour of wind.
00:52And then, again, we just got soaked by one of the squalls, and there's definitely more out there.
00:58And over my shoulder, you probably can see some of those surfers.
01:01We tried to get tucked in a little bit from the weather.
01:03But way out there, there's still a good 40 to 50 surfers doing their thing out there, enjoying the increased seas.
01:10There is a high surf advisory here in eastern coastal Florida through today.
01:14And Bernie was right.
01:15He nailed it.
01:16He said stay here in east coast Florida.
01:18And that's what we did, and we knew the weather was going to be dicey today, and it definitely is dicey for sure as these squalls move onshore.
01:26But you can also see way out there, the sea heights are going to be anywhere from 7 to 13, not in our particular shot, but the forecast is 7 to 13-foot seas.
01:36So really rough conditions.
01:39Here in Brevard County, that high surf advisory is expected to stay through midweek.
01:43And it's not just beachgoers feeling the impact.
01:46Cruise lines across Florida are altering their cruise destinations as Imelda and Umberto track across the Atlantic.
01:54Several ships returned to port early yesterday, including Royal Caribbean's Utopia of the Sea, Carnival's Glory, and the Disney Wish,
02:02all cutting trips short to avoid the choppy seas out there.
02:06So far, there have not been full cancellations, but adjustments are stacking up.
02:10Itineraries are being reworked, rerouting ships away from the Bahamas and Bermuda, swapping out Western Caribbean stops, and adding unexpected sea days.
02:21The most important thing when you're planning a cruise during hurricane season is that you just remain flexible.
02:26Just know that sometimes the original plan of where you were going to go, perhaps a Caribbean island or somewhere in the Bahamas,
02:34you may end up in a different location just because the ship's goal, the captain's goal, the onboard team,
02:41is really just trying to make sure that the ship sails into the safest waters possible.
02:48Now, the Carnival alone repositioned eight ships this week.
02:51Disney shifted their Castaway Cay visits and canceled their trips to Nassau.
02:56Royal Caribbean also postponed its trips to St. Kitts.
02:59The goal with all of these cruise lines is to keep their travelers safe while still keeping their ships out to sea.
03:05The ripple effect goes beyond the water, though.
03:07Flight delays and cancellations are hitting airports from Fort Lauderdale through the Bahamas as bands of rain and wind move through.
03:14And we're also expecting, you know, this to last at least for the next couple of days in this area.
03:19Of course, now Imelda, a hurricane bringing that dangerous surf here in Florida, possible beach erosion as well.
03:25And that's what we're going to be watching out for today.
03:28So far, there have been no cancellations on those cruises, as I mentioned.
03:32But the big key thing they want people to know is if you're cruising this week or if you're going to be out and about in this area.
03:39Again, check ahead.
03:40There are some flight delays in Florida if you're traveling into the state to go to one of the cruise lines.
03:46And that is really the only hiccup they're running into.
03:49By the way, my wind's now about 10 miles an hour sustained on my kestrel.
03:53So definitely a brisk out here.
03:55We're getting those squalls, and we're expecting those to continue throughout the day today.
04:00Reporting live in Port Canaveral, I'm Leslie Hudson.
04:02Back to you guys.
04:03Someone's trying to get some air time behind you, Leslie.
04:05Yeah, it's got some air time fixing the hair behind you.
04:07Hi, Mom.
04:11Say hi, Mom.
04:11Oh, look at the crew.
04:12There they come.
04:13Hey, guys.
04:14Come on.
04:15Hey.
04:16How are you?
04:16Oh, you're all wet.
04:17Good morning.
04:18Good morning.
04:18Where can we see this?
04:19AccuWeather?
04:20Yeah, I'm live right now.
04:21Oh, please don't.
04:22No?
04:23No.
04:23Well, we're live.
04:24But okay.
04:25Well, I hope you have a great day.
04:26Stay dry.
04:28Come on through.
04:29Good morning.
04:29Yeah.
04:30You want to be on camera?
04:30Yeah.
04:31We sure lucked out, didn't we?
04:33It's like amazing.
04:34I've lived here since 1977, Indian Harbor, but this is the first I remember two back-to-back
04:39where one actually pulled the other out.
04:42I know.
04:42Is that amazing?
04:43It's good stuff.
04:44Crazy, right?
04:45Thank you for what you're doing.
04:45All right, you guys.
04:46Have a blessed day.
04:47All right.
04:48And Calabunga.
04:50Calabunga.
04:51Boy, I'll tell you what.
04:52I was going to say the Fuji war effect, but I want to tell you what.
04:57Calabunga sounds a lot better.
04:58Calabunga's way better.
04:58Maybe we ought to make a Calabunga effect.
05:01I'll have to work on that.
05:02Oh, my gosh.
05:02Leslie, you're fighting the best people.
05:04Leslie with the people.
05:05I'd like to lay, no, please don't.
05:06You're like, well, we're already on.
05:07We're already on.
05:07Nothing we can do about that.
05:09Okay.
05:09Okay.
05:10Miss Leslie, great stuff.
05:11Stay dry.
