When legendary actress Betty White passed away just weeks shy of her 100th birthday, fans reflected on the milestone she almost reached. But could the 21st century bring a surge of centenarians—and even supercentenarians? In this “Stats + Stories” episode from April 2022, cohosts A. John Bailer and Rosemary Pennington talk with Michael Pearce, an assistant professor of statistics at Reed College, whose Significance magazine article, “Will This Be a Record-Breaking Century for Human Longevity?” explores whether this century might set new records for human lifespan. From population growth and demographic modeling to Bayesian forecasts and the challenges of verifying ages over 110, Pearce discusses what the data reveals—and what uncertainty remains—in humanity’s pursuit of longevity. https://lnkd.in/ePbCBRHW #StatsandStories #Statistics #DataScience #PopulationGrowth #DemographicData #DemographicStatistics #BayesianStatistics #Longevity #ASACommunity

I just got confirmed as a Presenter for the ASSON 2025 National Statistics Student Conference, hosted by Instats, in collaboration with the American Statistical Association (ASA). I’ll be presenting my research titled:"Spatial Analysis of COVID-19 Pandemic Vulnerability in Nigeria” It feels like one of those small but important “we’re just getting started” moments , quietly stepping into rooms we once admired from afar and taking up space as young researchers. I love seeing more Nigerian students showing up in these international-linked spaces. May this be one of many stages 🤍 Grateful. Nervous. Excited. All at once. Let’s see how it goes, or no...I will make it go exactly how it is supposed go: perfectly!
