🌍 Economic Activity, Skills & Lifelong Learning It was a pleasure to hear from Dr Amy Heaps, Mark Magill, Kristel Miller, Susann Power, and Paula Devine today, as they shared valuable insights from the NI Life and Times Survey, and early insights from research on Lifelong Learning. 🔍 As the conversation unfolded, it highlighted a striking gap between public attitudes, perceptions, and the lived realities of economic activity in Northern Ireland. How can we better raise awareness of the supports already available and truly understand the barriers and enablers that influence access to suitable paid employment, self-employment and lifelong learning? Some of the themes that resonated with me: ✅ Greater recognition of transferable skills. 💡 The need for more effective employer incentives. 🌱 And a broader cultural shift in how we value learning and work across all stages of life. Ongoing qualitative research is now digging deeper and it’s this kind of evidence-based approach that’s essential to shaping a more inclusive, adaptive, and opportunity-rich labour market for everyone. #LifelongLearning #SkillsDevelopment #InclusiveEmployment #NorthernIreland #WorkforceDevelopment #PublicPolicy #LifeAndTimesSurvey EPIC Futures NI, ARK, Ulster University Queen's University Belfast, Innovate UK, Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), ESRC: Economic and Social Research Council

Yesterday evening we were delighted to welcome Prof Aaron Reeves from The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) to deliver our ARK at 25 lecture Ulster University. Prof Reeves discussed findings from his recent book (co-authored with Prof Friedman) Born to Rule: The Making and Remaking of the British Elite. Dr Dave Wall and Dr Erin Early from Ulster University provided responses drawing upon key issues for social policy and inequality that were raised in the lecture. Thank you to all who attended. ⏺️ A recording of the lecture will be available on the ARK website soon.

Congratulations to ARK on an excellent Public Lecture "Born to Rule: the making and remaking of the British Elite" with Professor Aaron Reeves at Ulster University this evening. We have so much work ahead of us to challenge the "symbolic market for ordinariness" that masks a chasm in ideological differences between the elites who wield disproportionate positional/economic power - and the rest of us.
