I'm really excited to share the first publication from my PhD! Peripheral nerve injuries are complex and challenging to repair—especially large-diameter nerves, which often require cable grafting — a technique that is effective but technically demanding, time-consuming, and reliant on numerous microsutures. In this study, we tested Nerve Tape, a microhook-based nerve connector from BioCircuit Technologies — originally designed for end-to-end repairs — and adapted it as a sutureless alternative for cable-graft repairs. Using a cadaveric model, we found that MNC-assisted repairs not only withstood higher mechanical loads than traditional microsutures but also maintained entubulation of individual graft strands during sequential failures. These results corroborate previous findings on the mechanical strength of Nerve Tape and suggest it is a feasible alternative to microsutures for cable grafting. This project marks a major milestone in my PhD journey, and I’m deeply grateful to my mentors Jonathan Isaacs, Geetanjali Bendale, and Henk Coert for their invaluable guidance and support. This project was made possible through funding from the Department of Defense. This research was published in the Journal of Hand Surgery. Nerve Tape® for Graft Repairs Dr. Geetanjali Bendale presented preclinical data evaluating the safety and efficacy of Nerve Tape® for graft repairs. This comprehensive in-vivo rabbit study demonstrates Nerve Tape's applicability to graft-based nerve repair and highlights its potential as a reliable, efficient alternative to microsutures in autograft or allograft insetting. Stay tuned for the full publication! Read the abstract here: https://lnkd.in/gfyUkEEX
