"Our world is informational text." That powerful comment jumped out at me after (finally) having the chance to sit down with the recording of an excellent webinar I attended several weeks ago entitled "Unlocking Literacy: How Science and Social Studies Drive Deeper Learning." The webinar was presented by Daniel Mezzafonte, and Andrea A. and Zachary Linnert, Ed.D. of Britannica Education. The driving message was that we are ALL literacy teachers, regardless of our particular subject area. New frameworks such as NGSS for Science and the C3 Framework for Social Studies highlight connections to literacy and require students to be able to make claims based on what they are reading, seeing and hearing. Key takeaways for me: 1. Both subjects' inquiry-based frameworks allow teachers to take a step back and encourage students to take a leading role in the inquiry process. NGSS begins with asking science questions, and the C3 Inquiry Arc begins with helping students develop good questions. 2. Literacy is not just about words in a text. Being able to read maps, understand pictures, read graphs and interpret data are all literacy skills that can be developed outside the ELA classroom. 3. We as teachers need to provide the scaffolds necessary for students to read grade-level texts in our disciplines, not simply provide below-level resources to make access "easier." (UDL anyone?) 4. We need to rely on the expertise of our ELA teachers to help Science and Social Studies teachers get better at teaching literacy. Professional development can be in-house using resources we already have! This also validated for me the work I have been doing to encourage the use of phenomena-based instruction in subjects other than science. What better way to spark curiosity, engage students in developing good questions, and show significance than by starting with a local phenomenon as provocation? Phenomena are not just for the science classroom anymore! #Literacy #UDL #STEM #NGSS #SocialStudies
