The 'Hidden Halloween Economy' While Americans spend $12 billion at retail Halloween stores, a parallel creative economy is thriving online: 💰 $5,000 - Nationwide drive-in horror event marketing 💰 $1,000 - Multi-warehouse Halloween installations 💰 $750 - Children's book illustrations 💰 $650 - Unity-based Halloween archery games 💰 $540 - Custom animations for non-profit attractions This isn't hobby spending – it's professional-grade creative production spanning publishing, gaming, entertainment, and events. We’re seeing a shift from mass-market consumption to custom creation. From buying what's available to commissioning what you envision. 🎃🫣 The Halloween experience of your dreams (or nightmares!) made real For her company's annual Halloween party, Kim Durand commissioned custom costume designs through Freelancer rather than buying off-the-rack options. "My designer provided excellent suggestions and drawings, and I was very pleased with the quality of the items we created together," Kim says. Her project exemplifies how individuals and businesses are using Freelancer to create memorable experiences that store-bought decorations and costumes simply can't deliver. From warehouse installations ($1,000+) to nationwide event marketing ($5,000), companies are investing in professional-quality Halloween experiences – and finding the talent to execute them through platforms like Freelancer. "Even the ones from the big box stores were corny and silly. I was like, I think I can do better than this." Meet Thomas Black – a mythology teacher from Kansas City who wasn't satisfied with store-bought Halloween sound effects for his neighborhood haunted garage. So he hired a developer through Freelancer to build a custom soundboard app with 150+ theatrical-quality sounds designed for professional audio systems. "I wanted something that people felt rather than just were shocked by," Thomas explains. "Those notes that you can't hear that make your stomach kind of feel in a weird way." His haunted garage became legendary: "You could hear it from a mile away. People were calling their friends." The app launched with 50 downloads. This season it’s approaching 1,500. Thomas represents a broader shift: Americans rejecting mass-market Halloween in favour of ‘designer frights’ – custom, professional-quality experiences – enabled by platforms connecting them with specialised global talent.
