AI Safety is a problem and people pay to solve problems. So why aren't more founders building here? This week's AI Breakfast at the London AI Hub, hosted with Merantix Capital, brought together Ilia Shumailov (AI Sequrity Company, formerly Google DeepMind), Peter Garraghan (Mindgard, government advisor on AI security), and James Richards (Entrepreneurs First), moderated by Matilda Glynn-Henley (Merantix Capital, pre-seed VC investor). As AI becomes more powerful and more embedded in our economy, the risks are no longer theoretical. From sophisticated cyber attacks to autonomous agents operating without proper oversight, the case for building in safety from the ground up has never been stronger. The panel debated enterprise readiness, the acqui-hire trap, and why agentic systems are rewriting the threat landscape faster than the market can respond. It was put plainly: "we are far more likely to be too late than too early on safety." For researchers and technical founders considering the leap, the message was direct: find a builder, a scientist, and a salesperson, and put yourself in a room with people who skew towards action. The CTO Roundtable at the Merantix AI Campus is evolving. With Thomas Wollmann, our CTO, taking the lead as host, the series continues to bring together a curated group of CTOs for focused, peer-driven exchange. The CTO Roundtable is an ongoing, invite-only forum designed for meaningful dialogue among tech leaders. In small groups of 5–10 participants, each session creates space for open discussion around leadership, scaling technology, AI adoption, team structures, and the real challenges that come with building and growing tech-driven companies.
