  • Most scaling advice swings between two extremes: “Don’t worry about it yet” or “design for infinity from day one.” The reality is quieter—and more practical ⚖️ In this clip from the Smooth Scaling Podcast, Ryan S. from Intercom shares a simple lesson from scaling databases over time: If your data is shardable, design for that early—without over-engineering. That can be as small as: 🟢 Including a customer ID on customer-scoped data 🟢 Making sure indexes start with that ID It adds very little complexity upfront, but years later it can save weeks of migrations and painful rework 🚀 Good scaling work rarely looks impressive on day one. It just keeps your options open. 🎧 Full episode link https://lnkd.in/ePxRTrZm

  • Scaling rarely breaks all at once. ⛓️💥 It slowly becomes harder to operate, harder to change, and harder to trust. In the latest episode of the Smooth Scaling Podcast, Ryan S. from Intercom shared why they eventually moved away from a database setup that had worked well for years. Not because it failed. But because, at scale, small challenges gradually turned into real friction. Maintenance windows still meant downtime for global customers Proxy layers became an increasing source of incidents Per-customer sharding began to slow engineering teams down Those pressures ultimately led Intercom to move to PlanetScale (Vitess), not as a silver bullet, but as a way to regain reliability and engineering velocity as the business continued to grow. Scaling is about recognizing when success has outgrown the architecture that got you there—and having the discipline to evolve your systems so they keep working, no matter the demand. 🎧 Full episode link https://lnkd.in/ePxRTrZm

  • Scalability isn’t about chasing infinite growth. It’s about building systems that keep working as success compounds. In this episode of the Smooth Scaling Podcast, Ryan Sherlock (Director of Engineering at Intercom) reflects on a decade-long journey of scaling databases and infrastructure to support millions of customer interactions—reliably. From early MySQL decisions to sharding, Aurora, and eventually PlanetScale (Vitess), the conversation explores how architectural choices shape both engineering velocity and customer trust. 🎧 Watch the full episode to hear: • How Intercom scaled databases over 10+ years • Why they moved from Aurora to PlanetScale (Vitess) • How heartbeat metrics catch incidents in seconds, not minutes 👉 Full episode link in comments. #Scalability #SmoothScalingPodcast
