Can your car really prevent traffic accidents? It is smarter than you think! Zero traffic accidents might sound ambitious, but today’s smart driving systems are already helping us get closer. In this episode of Behind The Wheel, Tom Rycken shares how Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) use radar, cameras, and intelligent software to support drivers like you in real time, especially when distraction strikes. And as new mobility solutions like e-scooters become more common, Tom’s team ensures that ADAS can detect and respond to an ever-changing traffic environment. #Toyota #Automotive #Safety

Two Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK apprentices, 23-year-old Emily Bettridge and 22-year-old Liz Hopkinson, are training to represent the UK at the international finals of the 48th WorldSkills competition in Shanghai in 2026, following their gold medal success at the national finals. Both are Multi-skilled Mechatronics Maintenance Technician Apprentices at the Burnaston factory, working with Burton and South Derbyshire College. Liz, based in the Plastics shop, and Emily, in the Paint Shop, impressed judges with their technical precision and teamwork, earning top honours in mechatronics. Now part of Squad UK, they’re training with industry experts and former medal winners. The best performers will be selected next spring to join Team UK in Shanghai, where they’ll face challenging, real-world technical tasks under strict time limits. WorldSkills is the global benchmark for vocational excellence, bringing together over 1,500 young people from more than 80 countries to compete in disciplines from engineering to creative arts. Reflecting on her journey, Liz said: “The training is really high intensity - there’s a lot of time pressure and problem-solving - but it’s helped me grow so much. I get to learn by doing, and I’ve gained real experience that’s preparing me for a career.” Emily added: “Competing in WorldSkills has pushed me to my limits, but it’s been one of the most rewarding experiences. Every day is different, and there’s a real sense of achievement when you fix something and get the line running again.” Their achievements highlight the value of apprenticeships and skills competitions in shaping the future of UK manufacturing. #WorldSkills #Apprenticeships #STEMCareers #WomenInEngineering #Manufacturing
