Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) reposted this
In a city where the beginnings of World War II took place, a truly historic moment unfolded in the veteran community in Alexandria, Louisiana yesterday—one that quietly carried profound significance. For those present, it marked a powerful display of unity and shared purpose among America's premier veterans service organizations. During their overlapping Mid-Winter conferences in Alexandria, the VFW Department of Louisiana and the American Legion Department of Louisiana came together in the same city at the same time. In a rare and meaningful gesture of solidarity, American Legion National Commander Dan Wiley addressed the assembled members of the Louisiana VFW. Joining him on the VFW side was VFW National Senior Vice Commander Cory L. Geisler, whose presence amplified the event's weight. While the VFW and American Legion maintain distinct membership criteria and proud traditions, there is zero question about their overlapping missions and immense value to communities nationwide. Both organizations remain steadfast champions of veterans advocacy, community service, support for military families, and critical efforts to combat veteran suicide—working tirelessly to ensure no veteran is left behind. A heartfelt thank you goes to Commander Wiley for going above and beyond: not only speaking directly to Louisiana's VFW members but also making time to visit local American Legion posts in Lafayette and connect with student veterans at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. His leadership exemplifies the spirit of collaboration that strengthens the entire veterans movement. The same deep gratitude extends to Senior Vice Commander Geisler, whose unwavering call for Congress to finally pass the Major Richard Star Act—a long overdue bill to restore full retirement pay and benefits to combat-injured veterans without offset—resonated powerfully through the room. His stern message was a reminder to our members in Congress that our wounded warriors deserve nothing less than full honor and support after their sacrifices. Finally, a resounding shout-out to American Legion Post 504 (Francis-Benoit Post) in Lafayette. If you want a living example of what a veterans service organization can achieve, visit this remarkable post. These dedicated men and women are making a tangible, everyday difference—supporting veterans in need, fostering community ties, and modernizing their approach to better serve today's generation. They embody the best of what these organizations stand for. Events like this remind us that when the VFW and American Legion stand together, the voice for veterans grows stronger, louder, and more effective. Here's to more unity, more advocacy, and more victories for those who've served. Service doesn’t end with the uniform. This is what it looks like when veterans and communities come together for one another. 🙌
This past holiday season offered a powerful reminder of what is possible when veteran organizations, community leaders, and volunteers come together with a shared purpose. When an Indiana National Guard Soldier and their family experienced a devastating house fire, the response from the veteran community was immediate and extraordinary. Through the coordinated efforts of multiple Veterans of Foreign Wars Posts and the Veterans Foundation of Indiana, more than $5,000 in direct financial support, winter clothing, and community care were delivered in a matter of days. This effort builds on a larger wave of support this season. When combined with contributions made earlier through Wish For OUR Heroes, the total impact across these organizations exceeded $20,000 in support to Soldiers and military families during the holidays. I am incredibly proud of the leadership and compassion demonstrated by the VFW community, including VFW Posts 1282, 908, 10003, and 1587, and the Veterans Foundation of Indiana. Special appreciation goes to leaders and advocates who stepped up without hesitation, including Sheila Corcoran, Richard Leirer, Judy King, Mike Mead, and many others who worked behind the scenes to turn concern into action. What stood out most was not just the financial support, but the speed, coordination, and humanity with which these organizations responded. This is what it looks like when values meet execution. It is also why I am proud to stand alongside these organizations and call them partners in service. I share this not only to recognize their incredible work, but to encourage others to get involved. Volunteer your time. Donate when you can. Support organizations that show up when it matters most. The impact is real, immediate, and life-changing. Service to others does not end with a uniform. It continues through community, commitment, and action. VFW National Commander Carol Whitmore and Washington Office Executive Director Ryan Gallucci were in Poland, meeting with service members at Camp Kościuszko, home of U.S. Army V Corps Headquarters (Forward) and the U.S Army Garrison Poland, which is responsible for 12 installations in western Poland and supporting operations on the eastern flank of NATO. Discussions centered around VFW’s advocacy priorities, benefits and transition assistance, and the unique challenges of military life overseas. The visit reinforced the importance of honoring commitments to those serving on NATO’s eastern flank and reaffirmed the VFW’s commitment to standing with troops, supporting benefits access, and advocating on behalf of service members - wherever they serve. When VFW last visited Poland, service members encouraged past VFW National Commander Tim Borland to promote a resolution to support proper recognition for service on the eastern flank of NATO – a resolution that the VFW has persistently renewed and one which remains relevant today for those who serve in the region.
