“I only briefly got to work with Michael when he was launching Zazuba, though I probably toured half of downtown San Francisco trying to get our system installed with change-averse retailers. Michael had figured out a critical component in the businesses process that was under-served, even if we underestimated how difficult it would be to get merchants to buy in. Having seen an opportunity, Micheal went after it with a remarkable efficiency. Michael Buckwald is a guy who has his finger on the pulse of what is next wherever technology meets process. He's a natural life hacker but he also has the brains and experience to do more than merely kludge a solution out of chewing gum and duct tape. He is that guy you meet who has all the ideas that should have been obvious yet, somehow, they eluded the best of us until he gave them a voice. There have been others who had this skill. I look forward to seeing if Michael one day puts a "ding in the universe" the way guys like Jobs and Musk have done. Now, excuse me while I grab a front row seat and some popcorn...”

With RL techniques like GRPO, it’s become easy to fine-tune small models to outperform foundation models on vertical tasks. We’re open sourcing Osmosis-Apply-1.7B: a small model that merges code (similar to Cursor’s instant apply) better than foundation models. Links in comments! Using foundation models for high specificity, low complexity tasks like code merging can be overkill - instead, it’s better to use a specialized model instead for higher performance and latency. We fine-tuned the model on 100K real-world code commits where the model needs to merge a code edit snippet into an original code snippet. On the test dataset (subset of CommitPackFT), foundation model performance ranged between 0.77-0.93 reward score. In comparison, Osmosis-Apply-1.7B achieved a 0.98 reward score - while also being 3X-5X more affordable than the next cheaper model AND ~10X faster! Why this matters: the best AI agents use multiple models to ensure task specialization and reliability at scale - on top of cost and latency benefits as well.
