Great article by Mike Wheatley for SiliconANGLE & theCUBE on Oracle's latest earnings announcement. I was glad to be part of the conversation. Rebecca Wettemann explained, “Investors are still nervous about cloud infrastructure providers overspending and overbuilding to support future AI workloads. It feels like the social contract in tech between employers and employees has been permanently broken over the past few years. Historically - employees could expect to keep their job so long as 1) they weren't fired for performance, or 2) there wasn't a major issue impacting the company's finances - huge decline in revenue, ending a product line, a major recession, etc. We're long past the era of keeping the same job for decades, but there was some tacit job security. Rather than mass layoffs, employers would pause hiring for a quarter or two and reassign employees. Large-scale layoffs were only a last resort, and those impacted were often given healthy severance packages. Openly cutting tens of thousands of employees at once - while fully within the rights of employers - just wasn't seen as something that was done in tech, especially by companies that are doing so well financially. Over the past few years, that norm has been broken. Since 2023, Amazon alone has cut nearly 100,000 jobs over a few rounds. Microsoft, Meta, Google, Salesforce and many others have as well. By all accounts, these are enormously profitable businesses worth trillions of dollars. The norms around how these layoffs are performed has even changed. Historically, employees would find out from their managers and been offered generous severance and extended healthcare coverage. Now, many wake up to find that their access has been cut off and that they have a few weeks of severance. When employees feel like commodities that can be quickly jettisoned at the whim of a CEO, they stop acting like invested employees in it for the long haul and instead act more like mercenaries who show up to work for whoever's paying them, but otherwise have no loyalty or investment in the business. Business is done on the margins. Those late night emails, the extra mile taken to make a customer happy, missing your kids' birthdays, etc are done by employees who are invested, not by mercenaries.
