This clearer, more accessible name puts the Open Heritage Statement at the center of our global advocacy, advancing equitable access to heritage in the public domain. It was such an honor to deliver the keynote today at the Museums Association’s conference "Open Minds: Understanding Copyright in Museums" Thank you Naomi Korn and Rebecca Atkinson for this opportunity to raise awareness about some of the barriers to access to public domain heritage and how the #OpenHeritageStatement aims to help lower them to enable more equitable access to heritage in the digital environment. Thanks to the 200+ participants and especially the great questions and discussion. Here's a two-point summary of my talk: 1️⃣ The problem: access to heritage is threatened in the digital environment, blocked by unjustified and unnecessary barriers — the public domain is being eroded. 2️⃣ The solution: open heritage. Cultural heritage institutions can use Creative Commons licenses and public domain tools to share their heritage collections, making them available for all sorts of reuses, free of unnecessary barriers. The Open Heritage Statement, the result of collective work on a global scale of the Open Heritage Coalition, enshrines the values and principles that underpin equitable access to heritage, and calls for policy action to remove barriers. We’re proud to announce that Internet Archive Europe is now an official signatory of the Open Heritage Statement (Open Heritage Coalition), an initiative by Creative Commons, joining a global coalition committed to advancing equitable access to cultural heritage in the digital environment. The Statement brings together organisations around the world working to remove barriers that keep public domain heritage inaccessible and to ensure that culture can be freely explored, shared, and reused. “Signing the Open Heritage Statement reflects Internet Archive Europe’s deep commitment to opening access to heritage and strengthening the cultural commons.
