A Healing Hub in County Down
Many veterans live with life-changing injuries – both physical and psychological. Some carry the impact of their service in visible ways, while others face hidden battles like PTSD, chronic pain, or trauma. Alongside them, members of the emergency services – paramedics, firefighters, police officers, and coastguards – also seek recovery from the pressures of frontline roles. Let’s Do Veterans Support & Rehabilitation creates space for them all.
Founded by Robert Maxwell – a veteran and survivor of a devastating hit-and-run accident – the charity has transformed a piece of land in County Down into a peaceful retreat. Known as Kennedy’s Lake, the site brings people together through fishing, camping, wildlife watching, and shared experiences.
It’s a place where members and volunteers find companionship, calm, and the confidence to rebuild their lives – together.
The Next Step: A Wildlife Sanctuary and Camping Island
With support from the John Good Group, the team now hopes to develop a small island on the site into a dedicated nature sanctuary and inclusive camping area. Planned improvements include:
- Removing dead foliage and replanting with native species
- Constructing a wildlife hide and overnight shelter
- Improving site access for wheelchair users
- Installing secure fencing and providing adequate parking
A Space for Everyone
This project will benefit both people and planet. It will enhance biodiversity, make nature more accessible for members with disabilities, and create a space for wildlife education days. In time, the sanctuary will offer open weekends for the wider community – bringing people together through nature and shared purpose.
Being shortlisted brings a real sense of achievement for everyone involved, from directors through to volunteers. Our members, some of whom use wheelchairs or live with disabilities, feel this project might truly be possible with the John Good Group’s help. We’ve faced many challenges, but this brings hope and something to look forward to.
I was deeply moved meeting Robert and learning how Let’s Do emerged from his own journey of recovery. Their vision for the wildlife island is both thoughtful and inclusive – offering not only healing for veterans, but benefits for the wider community. I was particularly impressed by their secure, long-term vision and strong plan for the future. It’s clear they are driven by resilience, purpose, and a deep commitment to lasting impact.
