ENGLISH- THE INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE

More than 6,000 languages are spoken in the world today. Of course, many of these languages are
spoken by small groups of people. In fact, some languages are spoken by only a few hundred people. On the
other hand, more than 200 languages are spoken by groups of million or more people. Of these languages,
24 have more than 50 million speakers each. Many people all over the world use one international language
to communicate with each other. That language is English.
More than 400 million people speak English as their first or native language. Yet there are now more
speakers of English as a second language that there are speakers of English as a first language! The number
of people who speak English is growing quickly. Because of the huge population of china – more than one
billion people – Chinese is the only language with more speakers than English.
English is the native or official language of one-fifth of the land area of the world. It is spoken in
Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United States. It is also one of
the official languages in India.
More people study English than any other language. In many countries, the textbooks in universities are
in English. Furthermore, many university classes are taught in English even though English is not the native
language of the students.

Answer the questions.

1. How many languages do people speak in the world nowadays?

2. How many languages do groups of one million or more people speak?

3. What is the language many people all over the world use to communicate with each other?

4. How many people do they speak English as their first or native language?

5. Where is English spoken?

6. Where is English one of the official languages?

7. What is the only language with more speakers than English?

8. What language is the international language in this text?

9. In your opinion, is English important for you? Why?

10, In your opinion, why do you want to study English?

Has technology made the world a better place to live?

Prepared By : Mr Sreng Van Uok, Master Of Arts in English Tel: 012 715 295/ 097 7 662 944
Sok An Ton Lab High School Practice Test

With the development of technology, there have been a lot of changes to our life. Admittedly, some of these
changes are bad, causing many environmental and social problems. However, most of these changes
contribute to making our life more convenient, more comfortable and more wonderful.

First of all, due to the improvement of technology, people can enjoy more conveniences than ever. For
example, it only takes travelers or businessmen several hours to go to another countries by jet planes, which
makes the world seem to be much smaller. With the help of the Internet, people at different corners of the
world can communicate with each other at a significantly high speed and low cost. It is technology that has
cleared away the barriers that once prevented people from leading a convenient life.

Secondly, technology has made our life as comfortable as we can imagine. Sitting in air-conditioned rooms,
people do not have to suffer the extremely cold or hot weather any more. Whatever vegetable or fruit we
want to eat, we can always find it in a supermarket regardless of the season. We can also go to work in a
place far away from our homes by using automobiles or public transportation tools.

In addition, technology provides us many choices to spend our spare time. Listening to music by using an
MD, MP3 or Walkman, surfing the Internet or watching digital movies, all of these entertainments make our
life wonderful.

In conclusion, although technology has brought about some problems, such as air pollution caused by
increasing number of automobiles, and ethnic problems caused by cloning human beings, the benefits of
technology far outweigh its bad influences. So it is safe to say that technology has made the world a better
place to live.
