Do you agree with Herbert Gan's functions of poverty? Explain
According to Herbert Gans' theory on the functions of poverty, the affluent benefit from
the severe conditions. Even if the impoverished are compensated, the system's
benefits are unfairly distributed. He proposes a cyclical nature to poverty, with the poor
appearing doomed to remain stationary throughout generations due to their perceived
societal position. Furthermore, the idea makes potentially detrimental generalizations
about the poor, such as linking them to uncontrolled conduct and greater crime rates.
A truly egalitarian society, structured to suit all residents' needs, would reduce the
necessity for such a hierarchical structure and the stagnation it causes. According to
Gans' study, the system favors sustaining existing inequities over promoting progress
for the poor and enhancing their quality of life.
2. Try to prepare the following:
2.1 Your barangay's organizational structure or your school organizations where
you belong
A. Who are the officials? What are their roles?
As a member of the Legal Management Society (LMSoc), here are the officers of our
organization and their respective roles:
1. K.C. Honeychurch Garcia (President and Executive Vice President): The President
provides overall leadership and direction for the organization. The Executive Vice
President assists the President and often takes on additional responsibilities as
delegated.
2. Kenneth Tonggol (Vice President for Student Affairs): This officer focuses on internal
student matters, representing student interests and addressing their concerns within
the society.
3. Jie Ann Tapeño (Vice President for External Affairs): This role manages the society's
relationships with external organizations, partners, and stakeholders. They are
responsible for collaborations and outreach initiatives.
4. Nicola Bautista (Vice President for Logistics): This officer oversees the logistical
aspects of the society's events and activities, ensuring smooth operations.
5. Allea Sarmiento (Vice President for Internal Affairs): This officer manages the internal
operations of the society, including membership, communication, and internal
procedures.
6. Jashria Miranda (Treasurer): The Treasurer manages the society's finances, tracking
income, expenses, and budgeting.
7. Franz Salangsang (Secretary): The Secretary maintains official records, minutes of
meetings, and correspondence for the society.
B. How important are the roles that they play in your community? Are they
effective leaders?
Our leaders play critical responsibilities in maintaining the structure, mission, and vision
of our Legal Management program among UST students. It is also essential to stress
their leadership effectiveness, understanding that they, as student leaders, are working
hard to improve what we have in Legal Management. Their experience and passion for
their job leads to a deeper understanding and connection among students in our
program.
2.2 How do you communicate without speaking any words?
Communication is not limited to verbal expression; as humans, we convey thoughts,
feelings, and intentions through a variety of nonverbal cues. Facial expressions, body
language, and gestures all play important roles in expressing emotions—a smile can
suggest contentment, whereas a frown can indicate unhappiness or anger. Eye
contact, posture, and hand motions can convey confidence, curiosity, or discomfort,
but written communication, such as text messages, emails, and sign language, allows
for expression without speaking. Even quiet can be effective, indicating agreement,
disapproval, or reflection depending on the situation. Finally, communication goes
beyond spoken words, emphasizing the significance of understanding and interpreting
nonverbal clues in human interactions.
2.3 have you been oppressed? Why? How? Explain
I consider myself fortunate not to have personally faced oppression. As a member of
the LGBT community, I am cognizant of my actions and decisions in society, aiming to
make the best choices for myself. This approach has helped me navigate situations
more carefully, minimizing my chances of facing injustice. However, I am aware that
many members of the LGBT community experience enormous problems, including
prejudice and violence. Despite these hurdles, I am still devoted to living genuinely and
helping others in the community.
2.4 Have you tried to invest in something and gained? Or failed?
I grew up in a business family, and my parents deeply embedded in me the value of
saving and investing from an early age. In 2021, I invested ₱300,000 in Axie Infinity, a
blockchain-based game with high popularity. Initially, the investment worked well, so I
reinvested the gains to enhance returns. However, the value of Axie Infinity's in-game
assets and tokens declined, and I have yet to recover any of my investment monies.
This experience taught me the value of extensive research and diversification in
investment methods.
