According to Hindu scriptures Chaturthi Tithi(s) belongs to Lord Ganesha. Each lunar month in Hindu calendar has two Chaturthi Tithis.:-(1) Vinayaka Chaturthi (2) Sankashti Chaturthi
(1) Vinayaka Chaturthi:-The Chaturthi after Amavasya (new moon) during Shukla Paksha is known as Vinayaka Chaturthi Although Vinayaka Chaturthi fasting is done every month but the most significant Vinayaka Chaturthi falls in month of Bhadrapada. Vinayaka Chaturthi during Bhadrapada month is known as Ganesha Chaturthi. Ganesha Chaturthi is celebrated by Hindus all over the world as the birthday of Lord Ganesha.
(2) Sankashti Chaturthi:-The Chaturthi after Purnima (full moon) during Krishna Paksha is known as Sankashti Chaturthi.
Sankashti Chaturthi is also known as Ganesh Sankatahara or Sankatahara Chaturthi among Tamil Hindus. Although Sankashti Chaturthi fasting is done every month but the most significant Sankashti Chaturthi falls in month of Magha according to Purnimant School and in month of Paush according to Amavasyant School.
* In North India Sankashti Chaturthi during Magha month is known as Sakat Chauth. * This day is also the "Pushya Krishna Chaturthi" according to South Indian Calendars (in Telugu, Marathi, Gujarati and Kannada Calendars). * Some people even observe fast during this day. Devotees of Lord Ganesha keep fast from sunrise to moonrise on Sankashti Chaturthi. Sankashti means deliverance during troubled times. Lord Ganesha, the supreme lord of intelligence, symbolizes the remover of all obstacles. Hence it is believed that one can get rid of all obstacles by observing this fast. * If Sankashti Chaturthi falls on Tuesday it is called Angarki Chaturthi and it is considered highly auspicious. * Sankashti Chaturthi fast is mostly observed in Western and Southern India especially in Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu.

Importance of fast on Sankatahara Chaturthi:
Fasting on Sankatahara Chaturthi is considered very auspicious and extremely beneficial. Usually it is recommended to take up this vrat for a period of One year and observe fasting on all the Sankatahara Chaturthi days and will end it by performing
Maha Ganapathi Homam or Vaancha Kalpa Ganapathy Homan. By doing this, it is believed that all the difficult tasks will be accomplished and the obstacles will be removed from ones life.
(1) Chaturthi Morning Puja:
* Take bath early in the morning .Light a lamp with Ghee and offer a simple prayer to Lord Ganesha by chanting one of his famous Ganesha slokas (vakrathunda mahakaya.. surya kodi samaprabha..) or by reciting the 108 names of Ganesha or Aarti of Ganesha * Sankatahara Ganapathy Stotra can be said three times in the puja or in multiples of three. Number THREE is dear to Ganesha.
** Ganesh Gayathri Mantra:OM Ekadantaya Vidmahe Vakkratundaya Dheemahi Tanno Danti Prachodayat
** Ganesha Gayatri Mantra - Meaning:We devote our thoughts to the One Tusked Lord. We meditate upon Him who has a Curved trunk May the tusked one guide us on the right path.
(2) Fast:
The fast is supposed to be strict and only fruit, roots (the part of a plant which is below ground) and vegetable products are supposed to be consumed. The staple Indian diet on Sankashti Chaturthi includes Sabudana Khichadi, potato and peanuts. Devotees break the fast at night after sighting of the moon.
On this special day, devotees observe a fast from sunrise to moonrise in the evening (either abstaining from salt foods or just consuming fruits and milk or Sabudana Khichadi or , nuts or curd rice).
(3) Evening Puja
* The evening puja is performed after the sunset and when you can witness the moon.
In the evening on this very auspicious day offer Lord Ganesha incense, lamp and flowers. Offer these items seven times in a clockwise direction around his picture/deity form. Then offer Lord Ganesha the sacred Durva/Kusha/Darbha grass and then his favourite food viz. coconut, kheer (sweet rice), sugar candy and laddus. Then devotees recite or hear his prayers like the Ganesha Gayatri and the Ashtotharam Shatanamavali (his 108 names). Offer Lord Ganesh prayers with faith and devotion that he may remove all the obstacles that you may have in your path.
NoteAt times it becomes tricky to spot the moon, if the sky is clouded. So some refer to Almanac or Panchang to know the Moon-rise time for that particular day.
