The Communist Party of China is the ruling political party of the People's Republic of China. Commonly referred to as “the Party”, it was founded in 1921 and emerged in 1949 as the victor of a lengthy civil war with the Kuomintang government. The party's ideology has evolved with successive leaders, but generally combines elements of socialist patriotism and Chinese nationalism. Its general secretary is Xi Jinping, whose ideology encapsulates "Marxism adapted to Chinese conditions". Its party congress, the National Congress, convenes every five years, and is the public venue for changes to the party’s constitution and higher leadership.
