The Democratic Party is one of the two major political parties in the United States, opposite the Republican Party. It was founded in 1828 and the first Democrat to win the presidency was Andrew Jackson. Since its formation it has produced 16 presidents including John F Kennedy, Barack Obama and Joe Biden. The party, often called “the left”, has shaped the United States in many ways, including implementing acts such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. It is the oldest existing political party in the United States and advocates universal healthcare coverage, including legal access to abortion, liberal internationalism, LGBT rights and union support.
