The Edinburgh Festival Fringe was so named in 1947 because of its lack of ties with the city’s international festival. It is a mainstay of the cultural calendar and in 2024 sold more than 2.6 million tickets, making it the world's largest performing arts festival. The Fringe is open-access, meaning anyone can perform across any performance type as long as a venue is available. Comedy makes up a third of performances at the festival, which also hosts the Edinburgh Comedy Awards.
