The Paralympics is an international multi-sport event for athletes with disabilities, held every four years alongside the Olympic Games. Its roots can be traced back to 1948, when Dr Ludwig Guttmann — a pioneer in treating injured veterans of the Second World War — organised the first wheelchair games in Stoke Mandeville, England. The event grew into an international movement, leading to the first official Paralympic Games in Rome in 1960, which featured 400 athletes from 23 countries. Since then the Paralympics has expanded dramatically, both in popularity and the number of sports contested, with some of its greatest athletes including Trischa Zorn and Sarah Storey.
