The Republic of the Sudan is a northeast African country which, like its northern neighbour, Egypt, is known for ancient pyramids built in the Nubian Nile valley. Geographically it is the third largest country on the continent. It was the largest until Southern Sudan voted to become independent in 2011 and become South Sudan. Sudan became a secular state in 2020 and a civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces, a former government paramilitary force and other groups has been fought predominantly around the capital of Khartoum since 2023.
