South Dakota is a landlocked state in the North Central region of the US that is part of the Great Plains. Named after the Native American Dakota Sioux tribe, the state has the third-highest proportion of Native Americans in the US. It is bisected by the Missouri River and South Dakota’s geography consists of prairie and plains as well as canyons and flat-topped hills. It is also home to the Badlands, the Black Hills and Mount Rushmore. It consistently votes Republican in presidential elections.
