The RMS Titanic set sail from Southampton to New York City carrying more than 2,000 people but sank in the north Atlantic on April 15, 1912, after being hit by an iceberg. It was carrying some of the wealthiest people in the world in first class as well as hundreds of third-class emigrants seeking new lives in North America. A replica ocean liner, Titanic II, is planned by the Australian billionaire Clive Palmer. An OceanGate tourist submersible, Titan, imploded while carrying five people exploring the shipwreck on June 20, 2023.
