Victory in Europe Day celebrates the Allies’ acceptance of Germany’s unconditional surrender on May 8, 1945, marking the end of the Second World War in Europe. After Adolf Hitler committed suicide on April 30 the German High Command signed the Instrument of Surrender on May 8 and the last shots were fired on the eastern front on May 11. In 2020 the May Day bank holiday in Britain was held on Friday May 8 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE Day.
