In NetBSD, and just out of curiosity, what is the contents of fpos_t, @SirWumpus ?

We know we are asking about something "naughty". We are wondering the internal structure of fpos_t for various BSD systems such as NetBSD are.

Yes, we are going to end the era , in calc v3, of converting fpos_t into integers and performing arithmetic on the result.

Way back when (for calc this would be around 1999), the file position was a simple integer value: the calc code from long ago covered that simple integer into a numeric value that could then be manipulated. Since then the era of doing anything with the numeric part of a fpos_t has required worse and worse workarounds just to get the numeric value of the file position.

This will break compatibility with calc v2: but "that's the breaks" (pun intended). We are breaking compatibility with the calc v2 memory model with calc v3, so now is the time to stop trying to play with the internals of fpos_t.

UPDATE 1a

You will still be able to use the calc fseek() and ftell() builtin functions. Those will use the libc methods lseek() and ftello(), to manage a file position of a off_twhich calc will covert into an internal integer value. However these calc builtin functions will limit the numerical range to that which the underlying hardware can represent in anoff_t. So calling the calc builtin function fseek()` with a position of 2^23209-1 will be "right out" 😉.

UPDATE 2

We might add calc builtins of fgetpos() and fsetpos() which will be interfaces to the fgetpos() and fsetpos() libc functions. They would operate with the new file position data type, not calc numeric values.

We would need to create a file position data type in calc. This would effectively be the fpos_t value. This file position data type would be opaque and incompatible with integer data types. I.e., you won't be able to perform mathematical calculations with this new data type.
