The roots of this bibliography lie in the bibliography that I once hosted on my personal website ... more The roots of this bibliography lie in the bibliography that I once hosted on my personal website on medieval liturgy (which is now defunct). That was a somewhat idiosyncratic selection of books and articles that had proved useful to me in my own study of medieval liturgy. The list I compiled was never intended to be exhaustive, but it became clear to me that I would be unable to maintain it to my satisfaction given the increasing volume of works that handles medieval liturgy in some fashion and the difficulty I currently have in obtaining some items. Rather than abandon the bibliography entirely, however, I have decided to update it and post it here instead. The selection criteria are those works that significantly engage the interaction between liturgy and history, or those that provide scholarly guidance in bringing to light these links. It makes no claim to be a general bibliography on medieval liturgy, although I am open to suggestions for scholarship that I have overlooked. This bibliography is confined to secondary literature, and even among secondary works, I have not included studies that aim only to describe aspects of the liturgy or those that are very specialized or technical in nature. There are other places to go, for instance, for an in-depth bibliography of liturgical music. Normally I give only works that focus on the Middle Ages (ca. 500ca. 1500), Western Europe, and the discipline of historyor else the bibliography would become unwieldly and less usefulbut I exceed these boundaries in cases in which entries are of comparative or methodological interest. I have also tended to avoid scholarship that is primarily theological in nature without any attention given to the performance of liturgy. In cases in which they inform a discussion of liturgy, I have also incorporated items that treat ritual. The overriding goal of providing this list is to further the academic discussion of how the worship performed in and around churches affected life outside of them, and if it assists anyone in puzzling out this relationship, the effort exerted to create it will be well worth it.
