Working together for a world free of chemical weapons
About us
As the implementing body for the Chemical Weapons Convention, the OPCW, with its 193 Member States, oversees the global endeavour to permanently eliminate chemical weapons. Since the Convention’s entry into force in 1997, it is the most successful disarmament treaty eliminating an entire class of weapons of mass destruction. 100% percent of all chemical weapon stockpiles declared by possessor States have been destroyed under OPCW verification. For its extensive efforts in eliminating chemical weapons, the OPCW received the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize.

OPCW experts explain in Nature Reviews Chemistry how the OPCW Designated Laboratory (DL) network helps determine whether a chemical weapon has been used. Read the full article: https://rdcu.be/eIjuK Article highlights ⬇️ ✅ Robust proficiency testing Labs must pass strict tests to become and stay an OPCW DL. These not only test technical proficiency, but also provide assurances, through rigorous reporting criteria, that sample chain of custody is maintained, and that testing and reporting remain unbiased. 🔁 Sharing knowledge globally DLs share best practices, new approaches and methodologies to analyses, and collaborate on research together. This helps the whole network improve and stay fit-for-purpose. 🔬 Evolving with scientific advances The network evolves with advances in science and technology. OPCW is exploring new proficiency test on biotoxins, as well as the utility of chemical forensics-based approaches, and how AI can help analyse complex data sets.
