Abstract Electron cooling is a commonly-used technique to reduce emittance and momentum spread in ion storage rings. The simulation of electron cooling is inherently complex as it needs to consider simultaneously the ions, the plasma of electrons, the thermal effects of the electrons, and the influence of the magnetic field. Several models exist to simulate electron cooling which are implemented in codes like Betacool, JSPEC and RF-Track, the latter being developed at CERN by Andrea Latina. In this study, the results of RF-Track are compared with those of Betacool and JSPEC. This analysis focused on the dependence of the friction force and of the cooling time on crucial parameters. The influence of space-charge effects within the electron beam and of the ion dispersion is discussed, and the simulations are qualitatively compared with experimental data.
