What’s new in web typography?
This is a question I’ll be answering next month at Web Day Out conference. I’ll be clinging on to the coat-tails of a host of brilliant people who’ll be answering the wider question “what you can do in web browsers today?” I can’t wait!
There have been so many advances in HTML, CSS and browser support over the past few years. These are enabling phenomenal creativity and refinement in web typography, and I’ve got a mere 28 minutes to tell you all about it.
Using my Web Typography book as a starting point I’ll take you on a whirlwind tour of what CSS now enables you to achieve with web typography.
I’ll run along the cowpaths that have been paved (waves at size-adjust), pausing at the brilliantly simple but impactful (hello text-wrap) and spend time with the new and shiny things that bring expressiveness, fine detail, responsiveness, consistency and efficiency to your work: variable fonts in all their glory, typographic units like lh and cap, drop-caps, hanging punctuation, text-box-trim, container-aware fonts, fluid type and surprising things with lists.
It’s gonna be a wild ride! Join me at Web Day Out in Brighton on 12 March 2026. Use JOIN_RICH to get 10% off and you’ll also get a free online ticket for State of the Browser.
