Overview
A thriving community requires feelings of connection, safety, and utility. We help can achieve this through moderation.
Moderators
As we move towards a more community-led model for this platform, we are seeking community moderators! Potential moderators can express their interest by emailing [email protected] with “Zulip Moderation” in the subject line. In your email, please share a bit about why you are interested, any experience in moderation (not required), and a brief summary of your involvement to date with the CC Community. Let us know what channel(s) you might be interested in moderating.
Codes of Conduct
Taking action
Any actions taken within Zulip should be documented in the private #Moderation channel. The channel is available to anyone in the moderation role or in a group tasked with moderating one or more channels.
- Document the action and users impacted as the topic title in the #Moderation channel
- Provide context and evidence (ex. screenshots) within the topic discussion
It is often helpful, especially with spam, to search for messages from the offending user. This allows for more comprehensive documentation and action.
Violations of the codes of conduct should be met with proportional action. Potential actions:
- All moderators have the following potential actions available to them:
- warn user via direct message
- unsubscribe user from channel
- delete problematic messages and topics (only after it is documented in the moderation channel)
request follow-up - email [email protected]
- Administrators also have the following potential actions available to them:
- deactivate user

Administrator follow-up
Administrators must review the moderation channel. If there are topics that require or request follow-up:
- Add a note within the topic that you are following-up
- Take appropriate action (deactivate user, email [email protected], etc.)
- Resolve the topic
Administrators should follow-up within 2 business days, with the understanding that additional time may be required for more complex issues.
Spam
Because spam can be automated or otherwise very easily submitted, we must react to it as easily as possible or risk becoming completely overwhelmed. This means that reacting to spam may be done with less deliberation and process than we would prefer.
Clarity and ease
In addition to reacting to problems, moderators can also help users navigate Zulip. For example:
- Resolve a topic | Zulip help center
- Move content to another channel | Zulip help center
- When you receive questions via direct messages, encourage users to re-ask broadly applicable questions in the channel so others can assist or benefit
- Praise prosocial behavior and encourage positive social norms
