As Fox feted the premiere of its new series Gotham last night in New York, the network is betting on another drama based on a DC character from a top series creator. Fox has given a put pilot commitment to Lucifer, from Californication creator/executive producer Tom Kapinos and DC Entertainment sibling Warner Bros TV, which is behind all DC-themed TV projects.
Lucifer, whose look was modeled after David Bowie, has appeared as a supporting character in comic book series The Sandman and toplined an eponymous spinoff, both for DC’s Vertigo imprint. Based on the Vertigo characters, the TV series, written and executive produced by Kapinos, centers on Lucifer who, bored and unhappy as the Lord of Hell, resigns his throne and abandons his kingdom for the gorgeous, shimmering insanity of Los Angeles, where he opens an exclusive piano bar called Lux. Warner Bros TV is producing with Kapinos’ Aggressive Mediocrity.
WBTV has been rapidly expanding its live-action DC TV universe. This fall, it is going from one to four primetime series, returning Arrow and freshmen The Flash, Gotham and Constantine. In addition to Lucifer, it is prepping another major broadcast franchise with Supergirl, from Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler, and has Titans nearing a pilot green light at TNT.
CAA-repped Kapinos created and executive produced/showran the comedic drama Californication starring David Duchovny, which recently wrapped its seven-season run on Showtime.
The notion of ‘the debil’ in a leading (perhaps even sympathetic) role will never gain traction within the general public and I am sure there are already some folks working to boycott its broadcast. It would work better on something like FX or HBO.
This show has no chance in hell. Pun intended. It will draw little to no viewers.
What? Californication was one of my all-time favorite shows but now Kapinos is doing a network comic-book themed Drama??!! This has to be a joke. Could you ever see Hank Moody reading a comic book?
Just what we need… yet another low-rated comic book adaptation to go with all the other ones…
Hollywood’s War on Originality continues….
Thats douchey. Lucifer and its progenitor Sandman are literature, some of the best comic books ever published. Its telling you dismiss them both with a snarky aside. Your obviously a philistine.
I think Rena Moretti considers the adaptation as low-rated, not the comic book. Or at least I hope so.
Rena Moretti you callling the sandman on the highest celebrate comics low come on man..
I choose to read Moretti’s comment as critical of adaptation trumping original content. At the same time, she chooses to ignore the well-done adaptations.
