Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I tried to install using artix-base-runit-20250407-x86_64.iso.
I was disappointed that SSH was not enabled by default. Arch Linux ISOs have SSH enabled from the start. You just set the root password, check the IP with ip a, and you can easily SSH with the following command:

ssh -o StrictHostKeyChecking=no -o UserKnownHostsFile=/dev/null root@

But with Artix, having to configure it yourself is a hassle.
I configured it, but a troublesome error occurred. It was extremely annoying. I want the installation ISO to have SSH enabled from the beginning.
By the way, I was able to connect via SSH easily with Void Linux as well.

So, reluctantly I used artix-xfce-runit-20250407-x86_64.iso to install.
Then the following problem occurred: I used rankmirrors to select the fastest mirrors, but they were very, very slow. They start fast but slow down quickly. This kind of problem does not happen with Arch Linux repositories.

This is just my environment, but in my setup Artix is unusable.
Slow repositories are a very serious issue.

Overall, Arch Linux was better. (Except for systemd)

My overall judgement:

If you want the latest packages: Arch Linux
If you want to avoid systemd: Void Linux, Alpine Linux, Venom Linux, OpenBSD, Devuan
To try occasionally: Debian

I'll try Artix again in a year.

just installed, i think its gonna be great! but installer was kinda annoying, had to resize the installer window every time to see the progress, but its not the installer's problem, its my graphics problem, i hope artix will be great! also ventoy saved me because it wont just straight up boot uefi fat32. but with ventoy - it booted me to the installer! I love ventoy, im also a distrohopper and i hope il stop distrohopping and stop on artix. i think its gonna be the best arch based distro im gonna try.

Sadly, I find the installer environment close to unusable when Ethernet is not available (ie. I *have to* set up wireless). From the command line, connmanctl returns mysterious errors not mentioned either in the artix wiki or in the arch wiki; trying the xfce wifi applet is torture because the GUI seems to be configured for space aliens with ~4 hands and ~100 fingers. It is so depressing because I believe in the simplicity, including init, which is the selling point of artix. I don't know, maybe replacing wpasupplicant with connman is a mistake?
