It uses a forked version of the PiSi package manager, maintained as "eopkg" within Solus, and its flagship edition uses the Budgie desktop environment. Budgie was originally developed-in-house, but is now maintained as a separate project by the Buddies of Budgie team. Solus is also available in Plasma, Xfce, and GNOME editions. The distribution is available for 64-bit computers only.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Solus looks very nice, but on the functional side… just try to plug your Solus Laptop via HDMI to your TV, and you'll experience a nightmare.
A easy task for so many distros, but not for Solus, unfortunately.
Tried some troubleshooting from the Solus forums, could not get Solus to even recognize my TV.....and the drop a distro with such a flaw in 2025. Can't understand that.
Linux Mint does the job on the fly, just plug and play - why can't Solus do the job?
Also, JACK/Ardour does not work properly, don't know why, i gave up on Solus (despite the neat looks)

I liked it a lot, it's a pretty interesting independent distro, only hurts the lack of packages using their command manager eopkg which really good and easy to use, Solus works out of the box and if you cant find you favorite software with eopkg, the system comes with flatpak installed by default to handle the rest of your needs.

Pros: Built from scratch, not based on other distributions, giving it a unique experience; fast package manager and software center.

Cons: Can require users to find and install some specific applications manually; not always a lightweight experience for

I have tried Solus several times over the years as it matured. The first time I liked it-- the look was beautiful and it was a bit trickty to get installed correctly. I'm a distro-hopper big time and often change just for want of a new experience. Solus has always been NICE-- good looks, seeminly simple install (although I ran into issues-- but think it was more my older equipment at the time) . I'm presently DUAL BOOTING this with CACHY OS... and love Cachy.
BUT- this is quickly becoming my favorite so far.
This install went flawlessly- quick and smooth. It had some of what I need and use built in- and I LOVE that it automatically included DISCOVER configured for NOTHING but FLATPAK through FLATHUB. This- to me - makes ANY distro much more efficient.
I have a fairly new MINI SER6Pro from BEELINk. As I said- I'm DUAL BOOTHING this with CACHY OS. BOTH- are BTRFS and I like that. When I tried Solus before- I tried the various setups- but always go with KDE any time available. It's just BETTER in so many way.. I've always had issues using KDE on WAYLAND. Usually it causes the tiling feature (krohnkite on kde) to get all glitchy if it works at all. Also On Wayland, I can't use PLANK which I love to use on x11.

THis time, however, I installed everything on X11 Solus... except plank-- which I replaced with a separate panel at top serving as my dock. Once set up and configured, I swithced it to WAYLAND expecting it to fall apart and go all wonky on me ( do you like my technical terms?).. but it DIDn't...it all worked PERFECTLY. Even the tiling on kde with krohnkite works PERFECTLY- it tiles perfectly every time!!! I've acutally tried to overload the system by doing far too many activities at once-- and surprisingly it's handled every one with EASE and exactly as it should have.

Solus was always beautiful- and this issue is even better-- the colors seem so much more vibrant, and more alive-- and the sound is clearer.. It's FAST too- hard for me to tell the difference between this and CACHY OS actually! The thing I really love is that it's now BTRFS-- and I LOVE that more than other features because of the added performance in data and stability-- as well as the snapshots and rollback capabilites in case of some issue.

Looks, Performance, stability, perfect availability of what I need and if NOT it's on FLATHUB-- perfect. Solus has come a LONG way-- and done a GREAT job of doing it. I thought about making this a 10.. but NOTHING is perfect.. but so far- NO ISSUES AT ALL. Give it a try- you won't be disappointed.

I also like that it's independent- not caught up in the "politics" or "choices" of some big outfit- or something like Debian, Arch- etc.-- it's truly its own thing-- and doing it SO WELL>
