Puppy Linux

Last Update: 2025-09-14 15:29 UTC

Puppy Linux is yet another Linux distribution. What's different here is that Puppy is extraordinarily small, yet quite full-featured. Puppy boots into a ramdisk and, unlike live CD distributions that have to keep pulling stuff off the CD, it loads into RAM. This means that all applications start in the blink of an eye and respond to user input instantly. Puppy Linux has the ability to boot off a flash card or any USB memory device, CDROM, Zip disk or LS/120/240 Superdisk, floppy disks, internal hard drive. It can even use a multisession formatted CD-RW/DVD-RW to save everything back to the CD/DVD with no hard drive required at all.

Popularity (hits per day): 12 months: 32 (327), 6 months: 27 (348), 3 months: 29 (393), 4 weeks: 37 (376), 1 week: 46 (379)

Average visitor rating: 7.7/10 from 70 review(s).

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

BookwormPup64 is an excellent, light-weight, responsive operating system for accomplishing most common 'real world' tasks. That is, once a new User realizes that almost all applications under Linux and programs under Windows that 'burn' OSes to a USB-Key create READ-ONLY installatiion media. To be fully functonal Bookworm64 -all Puppies-- require a partition you can write to in order to preserve the User's changes: install new applications, save data, configuration files. Even the two which can be used --Unetbootin under Linux and Rufus under Windows-- require some knowledge of how to configure them. The easiest 'work-around' is to accept that limitation. Use which every you want to create a bootable USB-Key. Boot from that Key and use BookwormPup64's builtin FrugalPup-Installer to create a fully functional implementation on a 2nd USB-Key.
Once you have BookwormPup64 on a USB-Key you can use its builtin tools to copy the necessary files to a folder on any partition and then customize the bootmanager under any Linux to boot it.

Puppy Linux is SIMPLE and FAST! Fully customizable (fonts, themes, desktop, windows effects, conky lua and many more). Install programs easily using Synaptic Package Manager or download a SFS package built by the community. Install Puppy Linux using its Puppy Installer program. Easy UEFI/MBR grub2 installation using their grub2config. I have used Puppy Linux and its grub2config to rescue other distros when I get boot problem after an update. I call Puppy Linux my Rescue Distro and I recommend others to have Puppy Installed on a flash drive. A 32bit and 64bit Puppy can be installed on one flash drive for boot compatibility on both old and new systems.

Puppy Linux is DIFFERENT. One has to give himself time to fully and truly appreciate Puppy. But once learned and familiarized, It will be hard switching back to full blown Linux distros. I know I can't switch.

My 3rd gen i5 3570 still performs like a champ. Thanks to Puppy

tested the slackware basede s15pup32 32 bit for my old PB notebook with amd sempron 1.8 ghz and the s3 as video card ... excellent result, installed on HD runs in idle at 111 mb of ram, 350 with palemoon open. It recognizes everything including wifi and requires few adjustments to be perfect and literally resurrect an obsolete pc, highly recommended for those who want a truly lightweight system but also for those who have few demands and very little budget without giving up an efficient and sufficiently fast system
