With my local development environment set up, I try to log in. But login fails because etherpad is setup wrong or not reachable causing an exception.

Wouldn't it be better to allow login without etherpad set up? Because situations may occur in reality when etherpad is (temporarily) unavailable, and you don't want it to cause the site to break down.
