Fix for certain Ajax calls not completing.

Resolved a whole bunch of Pull Requests and consolidated a ton of code. If you have a previously pending pull request, please review it to ensure it's still relevant in this version of master.

Works around a bug in Firefox which causes the progress bar to not repaint correctly.

Fix a bug which could cause progress bars to persist longer than they should.
