Crack Attack!'s socket code was written based on the original programmer experience with parallel scientific simulation code. And no one has ever accused a piece of academic simulation code of being nimble. That is, the socket use is perhaps a bit naive, and as such it might not deal as effectively as it might with such things as not having a direct and dedicated connection.
